Definition and Citations:

Permission obtained from a court to take some action which, without such permission, would not be allowable; as, to sue a receiver, to file an amended pleading, to plead several pleas. See Cop- perthwait v. Dummer, 18 N. J. Law, 258.

TLD Example: A motion is normally the method used by an attorney to obtain leave of court to withdraw as the attorney of record for the accused in a criminal case.
